How to set up Instagram comment-to-DM automation
Auto-DM anyone who comments a keyword on your post or Reel — using Instagram's official API, in seven steps and under two minutes.
What comment-to-DM automation is
Updated 15 August 2026Instagram comment-to-DM automation sends a Direct Message automatically to anyone who comments a keyword you choose on your post or Reel. You connect an Instagram Business or Creator account to a tool built on Meta's official Graph API, pick the post, list the trigger keywords (for example "LINK" or "PRICE"), and write the DM. From then on the tool watches the post's comments and delivers that DM within seconds of a matching comment. Setting up the first automation in EngageDM takes under two minutes and is free — 60 days of trial, then a free plan with 500 DMs per month.

Why comment-to-DM works
A comment is a public signal of intent; a DM is a private conversation. Comment-to-DM automation joins the two: the person raises their hand in public, and the answer lands in the one inbox they actually read. Nothing is bought, no lists are scraped — the person asked, in writing, seconds ago.
The practical gain is that it removes the delay. Manually DMing 200 people who commented "LINK" takes an evening, by which point most of them have moved on. Automated, every one of them has the link within seconds of asking, whether that is 3pm or 3am.
How to set up Instagram comment-to-DM automation
-
Switch your Instagram account to Business or Creator
Instagram's messaging API only works on Business or Creator accounts, so a personal account cannot receive comment-to-DM automation at all. Convert it in the Instagram app under Settings and privacy → Account type and tools → Switch to professional account. It is free, reversible, and does not affect your followers or existing posts.
-
Connect the account to your automation tool
Sign in to EngageDM and connect Instagram through Meta's official OAuth screen. You are authorising the app on Instagram's own domain — you never hand over your Instagram password, and you can revoke the authorisation from Instagram at any time. Grant the messaging and comments permissions when prompted; withholding either stops DMs being sent. This takes about 30 seconds.
-
Choose which posts the automation watches
Point the automation at one specific post or Reel, or at every post on the account. Use a specific post when the DM contains an offer tied to that post — a lead magnet, a discount code, a waitlist link. Use every post for a standing reply, such as answering anyone who comments "price" anywhere on your account.
-
Set your trigger keywords
List the words that should fire the DM, for example LINK, PRICE, INFO or GUIDE. Matching is case-insensitive and matches inside a sentence, so "send me the link please" triggers on LINK. Choose ANY to fire when a comment contains any one keyword, or ALL to require every keyword in the same comment. Pick one short, unambiguous word for your call to action — asking your audience to comment a phrase reduces how many people actually do it.
-
Write the DM, with a CTA button
Write the message the commenter receives, personalising it with {{username}} or {{first_name}} so each DM is unique. Add a call-to-action button with a label of 20 characters or fewer and your destination URL — the link is automatically wrapped in a tracked short link so you can see clicks per automation. Optionally turn on the follow-gate to withhold the link until the commenter follows you.
-
Activate it and post your call to action
Switch the automation to Active, then publish the post or Reel telling people exactly what to comment: "comment LINK and I'll DM it to you". The automation now runs continuously — every matching comment gets its DM within seconds, day or night, with rate limiting applied automatically so the volume stays within Instagram's limits.
-
Check delivery and clicks, then adjust the keyword
Open the automation's analytics to see DMs delivered and CTA link clicks. The number worth watching is clicks divided by DMs delivered — a low ratio usually means the DM copy or the button label is wrong, not the offer. If comment volume is low, the keyword itself is often the problem: shorter and more obvious wins.
What usually goes wrong
Five failure modes account for nearly every "it isn't sending" report. Four of them are Instagram platform rules rather than bugs, so they apply to every comment-to-DM tool, not just this one.
The DM never arrives
Almost always a permissions or account-type problem, not a rule problem. Confirm the account is Business or Creator, and that both the messaging and comments permissions were granted when you connected — declining one at the Meta consent screen leaves the automation looking active while it can never send.
Instagram allows only one automated reply per comment
A private reply is anchored to a specific comment, and Instagram permits exactly one per comment, ever. That is why a person who comments twice receives two DMs while a retry on the same comment cannot deliver a second. Build for one comment, one DM.
Only the first message can be sent freely
Meta gives you a 24-hour messaging window that opens when the person replies or taps a button in your DM. The initial automated reply is allowed; a follow-up is only allowed inside that window. This is why a good comment-to-DM flow puts a button in the first message — the tap is what earns the right to send the second one.
Comments older than 24 hours are ignored
Meta's policy prohibits private-replying to a comment more than 24 hours old, so an automation switched on today will not back-fill last week's comments. Activate the automation before publishing the post, not after it has been running for a day.
Everyone gets the same generic message
Identical payloads sent at volume look like spam to any messaging platform, and read like it too. Personalise with {{first_name}} or {{username}} so each DM is genuinely distinct, and keep the message to something a human would plausibly type.

Comment-to-DM automation — FAQ
How do I set up Instagram comment-to-DM automation?
Switch your Instagram account to Business or Creator, connect it to EngageDM through Meta's official OAuth screen, pick the post to watch, list your trigger keywords, write the DM with a CTA button, and activate. The whole process takes under two minutes, and the first automation is free.
Can you auto-DM someone who comments on Instagram?
Yes. Instagram's official Graph API supports a private reply to a comment, which is what comment-to-DM tools use. It is a supported, documented feature of the platform, not a loophole — provided the tool uses the official API rather than scraping or logging in as you.
Do I need a Business account for Instagram DM automation?
Yes. Meta's messaging API is only available to Instagram Business and Creator accounts. Switching is free and reversible, takes about a minute in the Instagram app, and does not affect your followers, posts, or reach.
How fast does the automated DM arrive?
Within seconds of the comment in normal conditions. EngageDM receives the comment through Meta's real-time webhook, matches it against your keywords, and queues the DM immediately. The queue applies rate limiting deliberately, so during a large spike DMs are spread out rather than sent in a burst that Instagram would throttle.
Is Instagram comment-to-DM automation against Instagram's rules?
No, when it runs on the official Graph API. Private replies to comments are a documented capability offered to Business and Creator accounts, and EngageDM is an approved Meta Tech Provider. What does violate Instagram's terms is any tool that requires your password, scrapes the site, or drives a logged-in browser session.
How many DMs can I send per day?
Meta sets the ceiling, not the tool. EngageDM stays deliberately under it, sending up to 180 automated comment replies per hour per Instagram account with a short burst limit on top, which is well inside Instagram's technical limit and is what keeps accounts out of trouble during a viral post. The free plan adds a 500 DMs/month cap; the Pro plan at ₹250/month removes it.
What should I ask people to comment?
One short, unambiguous word that is easy to type on a phone — LINK, PRICE, GUIDE, INFO. Every extra character costs you comments. Avoid words that appear naturally in ordinary conversation about your post, or the automation will DM people who were not asking for anything.
