Actions are what EngageDM does when a trigger fires. You can combine multiple actions in a single automation.

Send a Direct Message

The primary action — sends a DM to the user who triggered the automation. You can write the message inline or choose a saved DM Template.

• Supports plain text, emojis, and line breaks.
• Use {{first_name}} to personalize with the recipient's first name.
• Max DM length: 1,000 characters (Instagram limit).

Reply to Comment

Posts a public reply under the comment that triggered the automation. This is separate from the DM.

• Useful for social proof ("Check your DMs! 📩") or to drive other users to comment.
• You can add multiple comment reply variants — EngageDM randomly cycles through them to look natural.

Ask to Follow (optional)

Instagram requires the recipient to follow you (or have interacted in the last 24 hours) before you can send them a DM. Enable "Ask to Follow" to have EngageDM send a follow prompt to users who haven't followed you yet, keeping your DMs compliant.
